ReefSumper Recommended Miscellaneous Gear

There is a limitless number of reef-keeping products on the market and new ones constantly coming on. Some are gems and below are some that didn’t quite fit into any of the other categories, but have been great to use.

Two Little Fishies Feeding Pouch

Situation: In my 210-gallon reef tank I have 3 large tangs that are constantly grazing for algae throughout the day. These fish and the others in the tank love eating nori, but made quite the mess in the tank whenever I would feed it to them on a standard clip.

Background: The Two Little Fishies Feeding pouch is a mesh pouch that is stuffed with food and held onto the tank via a magnet. The small holes of the pouch allow for fish to pick at it to slowly release smaller amounts of food. The magnet can completely detach from the pouch and replacement pouches can be bought separately as needed.

Assessment: My fish love this thing and it does work well. I stuff the pouch primarily with Nori and the fish tend to immediately congregate around the pouch and devour its contents quickly. I also use algae disks in the pouch and they tend to last longer allowing for a longer grazing period.

Recommendation: This is a good product that my fish go crazy for.  A variety of foods can be used and it has held up over time very well. The pouch keeps the water a lot cleaner by gating how much food is taken out of the pouch.

Two Little Fishies Pouch Feeder

Pouch Feeders allow freshwater fish and invertebrates or marine fish to easily graze at their frozen cubes and blocks or folded sheets of seaweed. Sit back and enjoy watching your fish forage for their food promoting natural habits without a hassle.

HI98319 Hanna Marine Salinity Tester

Situation:  Measuring your reef tank’s salinity is an important component of stable successful reef keeping.

Background:  Salinity should be measured regularly and is one of the first things to check if your tank or inhabitants don’t look right.  There are a few ways to read salinity including with a hydrometer, refractometer, and a digital measurement instrument.

Assessment: With my tanks, I regularly check salinity in the tanks and when making new saltwater for water changes.  It can be cumbersome to measure with a hydrometer and refractometer and I was looking for an easy way to measure salinity.

Recommendation:  The Hanna Marine Salinity has done a great job with accuracy and easing my way when measuring salinity and doing regular maintenance on my reef tanks.  The Hanna Marine Salinity Tester is much quicker and gives an easy-to-read digital measurement of both salinity and temperature.  The temperature reading is especially nice when making new saltwater.  The tester is a joy to use and worth the cost.
