Lego 31122 Creator Fish Tank 3 in 1 Building Set Review

My wife and kids are avid Legoholics who between them all have many sets and thousands of individual Lego pieces.  For me, I’ve never been that into Legos myself, but I gained much more appreciation for Legos when I received the Lego 31122 Creator Fish Tank 3 in 1 building set.

My wife surprised me with this set for my birthday.  The set has been hard to find in stores and online, but she was able to find the set randomly stocked at Walmart while she was shopping for groceries.  The cool thing about the set is that it includes a blue tang, a yellow tang, a cardinalfish, and an anthia.  We have all of those fish in our tanks except for the anthia.  The Lego Creator Fish Tank is my current favorite Lego set, read on to find out more about the Lego Creator Fish Tank.

Building the Lego 31122  Creator Fish Tank

The Lego Creator Fish Tank comes with a box, 3 packages of Legos, and three separate manuals for the fish tank, easel, and treasure chest.  Note that you can only build one of the models at a time.  Building the Lego Creator Fishtank was easy and took my two kids and me about 30 – 40 minutes to build at a leisurely pace.  Following the step-by-step instructions in each manual is straightforward and the pieces are easy to assemble for all ages 8 and above as the box indicates.  My kids had a wonderful time assembling the fish tank and with each completion of a fish, they would hold it up to the actual fish in our aquarium and compare.

Displaying the Lego 31122 Creator Fish Tank

The completed model is a wonderful display piece.  The fish tank would bring joy just about anywhere you choose to place it.  Some places that I considered were on a shelf directly above my 75-gallon reef tank or the coffee table in front of my 210-gallon reef tank.  I also considered bringing the model to my work office to have something to look at throughout the day and have a funny conversation piece.  Ultimately I ended up putting the model in a part of the house where I don’t have an actual fish tank, my bedroom.  Next to my side of the bed, I have a small bookshelf that is about waist high to me.  I put the Lego fish tank on the top flanked by pictures of my kids.  Now every morning when I kick out of bed the first things I see are the pictures of my kids and the lego fish tank a good start to the day every day in my book!

Opportunities for improvement with the Lego 31122 Creator Fish Tank

For what it is, a small to medium lower-priced Lego set, the Lego Creator Fish Tank knocks it out of the park as a fun and nice to look at display piece.  Here are a few things that maybe could have been improved on in my opinion.  We built the easel and treasure chest only once each and those variations weren’t that impressive.  I would rather have had the set be dedicated to just being a reef tank and include more pieces than a reef tank like a clean-up crew or something.  The set also includes a mini-submarine, which I just don’t think fits the set well or would be something you’d see in most reef tanks.  I would have liked to see some live rock.  One addition that I think would have been cool, is the inclusion of a screen top and an aquarium light.  This would be especially cool if the light worked and illuminated the inside of the tank.  I’m considering seeing if my son will try to build something to retrofit the tank to simulate a reef tank light.

After building this set and having it on my bookshelf for some time now one thing that I keep thinking about is how cool it would be to have a lego set that models an actual reef tank.  I’m talking about including the display, stand, lights, plumbing, fuge, and more marine animals and corals.  There are some intricate Lego sets with thousands of pieces these days.  A big realistic Lego reef tank is one I would be truly looking forward to!

Who would enjoy the Lego 31122 Creator Fish Tank?

I think the Lego Creator Fish Tank would be a smashing hit for just about anybody.  Kids of all ages who know about saltwater fish or the Finding Nemo movies would love this set.  The one caution is that it is relatively fragile and if dropped pieces can come off leading to a re-build.  I also think that anybody with a reef tank or love of marine aquariums would cherish this set as I do.  It would make a great birthday or Christmas gift for your reef lover.
